Among the more niche but persistent strands of community speculation surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI is the question of whether snakes โ particularly invasive Burmese pythons and native Florida species โ will feature in the game's wildlife system. Rockstar's choice of Leonida, a fictionalised Florida, as the setting practically demands consideration of the state's notorious reptile fauna. Florida is globally synonymous with snakes both for its native biodiversity and for the highly publicised invasive python crisis in the Everglades, a story so culturally salient that omitting it would be conspicuous (Wikipedia, 2025; History.com, 2020).
Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus), native to Southeast Asia, became established in South Florida from the 1970s through the exotic pet trade and were dramatically supplemented when Hurricane Andrew destroyed a python breeding facility in 1992 (Wikipedia, 2025). By 2000 they were a recognised reproducing population and by the late 2000s sightings exceeded 30,000 in a two-year span, with population estimates ranging from 30,000 to over 300,000 individuals (Dorcas and Willson, 2011). The pythons have caused catastrophic declines โ between 88% and 100% โ in Everglades mammals including raccoons, opossums, bobcats and marsh rabbits (Dorcas et al., 2012). The State of Florida's annual Python Challenge, in which bounty hunters compete to remove snakes, has become an iconic piece of Floridian cultural identity (The Guardian, 2016), and exactly the sort of media-friendly real-world hook Rockstar has historically parodied (e.g. Bigfoot hunts, cult activities, hunting subsystems in Red Dead Redemption 2).
Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 footage shows extensive Everglades-like swampland, airboats, alligators wading through sawgrass, and densely vegetated wetlands โ environments that ecologically correspond exactly to known python habitat (Rockstar Games, 2025). Community discussion across the GTAForums, r/GTA6 and YouTube has zeroed in on three speculative possibilities:
If Rockstar wishes to represent Florida's reptile reality with any fidelity, both groups need representation. Native species are ecologically dominant outside the Everglades core, while the invasive Burmese (and increasingly hybridised Indian rock ร Burmese) pythons dominate the deep wetlands (Hunter et al., 2017). A nuanced wildlife system could therefore differentiate biome-by-biome: rattlers in dry pine flatwoods, cottonmouths in cypress sloughs, pythons in sawgrass marsh. This kind of biome-specific fauna placement was already implemented in Red Dead Redemption 2, so the studio has the toolchain.
Sceptics note that snakes are technically expensive: serpentine locomotion, collision and player-interaction logic are non-trivial, and Rockstar may consider the return on investment minimal compared with mammals and birds. Furthermore, ESRB sensitivities around animal cruelty have grown since 2018, which could discourage a python-hunting mini-game. Nonetheless, given Rockstar's track record of satirising contemporary American culture, the python invasion is arguably too good a target to ignore.
Snakes are one of the most plausible โ if unconfirmed โ wildlife additions in GTA VI. The combination of an Everglades-rich map, a real-world cultural touchstone in the Florida python crisis, and Rockstar's prior implementation of detailed snake fauna in RDR2 makes their absence less likely than their inclusion. Whether they appear as ambient texture, a bounty system, or both, remains a matter of speculation until further footage or a hands-on release confirms it.
