Jeffrey Crawford "Lazlow" Jones โ the radio personality, writer, producer and audio director who became one of the most recognisable creative voices of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) and Red Dead Redemption (RDR) series โ left Rockstar Games in 2020 after nearly two decades at the company, and has since reunited with former Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser at the new narrative studio Absurd Ventures (Wikipedia, 2025a; Wikipedia, 2025b). The future direction of Lazlow's career, and by extension how (or whether) his sensibility will return to satirical open-world entertainment in the post-Rockstar era, has become a significant point of speculation among GTA 6 fans, industry analysts and games press. This report consolidates what is publicly known and offers grounded speculation about Lazlow's likely future, with particular reference to its implications for GTA 6 and the wider Houser/Lazlow creative project.
In April 2020, Lazlow Jones publicly confirmed his departure from Rockstar Games, citing "personal reasons" after spending nearly 20 years at the company. He had contributed to GTA, Max Payne and Red Dead titles as a writer, audio director, voice actor and on-screen character (notably as the host of Fame or Shame in GTA V), and had co-written radio stations alongside Dan Houser since Grand Theft Auto III (2001) (Wikipedia, 2025a). His exit followed Dan Houser's own resignation, announced by Take-Two Interactive in February 2020 and finalised on 11 March 2020 after an extended creative break in 2019 (Wikipedia, 2025b; Campbell, 2020). Industry commentary at the time framed the dual departures as a substantial loss of the principal narrative and tonal architecture behind GTA, with outlets such as Polygon, The Verge, Ars Technica and Inverse noting Houser's role as "the primary creative driving force" behind much of Rockstar's output (Wikipedia, 2025b).
After leaving Rockstar, Lazlow established Radio Lazlow, an independent production company that has reportedly developed projects for studios including Disney and Netflix, signalling an interest in continuing across multiple media beyond games (Wikipedia, 2025a; Reisinger, 2020).
In November 2023, Lazlow was confirmed as having joined Dan Houser's new narrative studio, Absurd Ventures, as executive producer; on the same announcement, longtime Rockstar writer Michael Unsworth joined as head of story (Bellingham, 2023; Wikipedia, 2025b). Absurd Ventures was incorporated by Houser in Delaware in February 2021 (with a UK subsidiary in Altrincham) and officially announced in June 2023 with a remit to "create new universes" across video games, books, graphic novels, scripted podcasts, live-action and animation (Wikipedia, 2025b). The studio's earliest announced projects โ a graphic novel titled American Caper (published by Dark Horse Comics) and an audio/podcast series, A Better Paradise, later novelised by Houser โ indicate a deliberately transmedia approach rather than a single-title focus (Wikipedia, 2025b). In September 2024 Absurd Ventures launched Absurd Marin, a games studio formed from roughly 20 former Immortals of Aveum developers, and in January 2025 unveiled the "Absurdaverse," a connected universe including animation and a "story-driven action-comedy adventure game" (Wikipedia, 2025b).
Given the public record, several plausible trajectories emerge:
Lazlow's future appears firmly oriented away from Rockstar and toward Absurd Ventures' transmedia universe-building with Dan Houser, while retaining the independent Radio Lazlow vehicle for ancillary projects. For GTA 6, the realistic expectation is absence rather than cameo; for the wider industry, the more consequential question is whether Absurd Ventures can convert the Houser/Lazlow/Unsworth creative reunion into a credible new IP capable of competing with the satirical open-world template they helped define at Rockstar.
