Survival Missions in GTA Online

Survival Missions in GTA Online

Overview

Survival Missions are a cooperative horde-mode game type in Grand Theft Auto Online in which between one and four players defend a fixed map location against ten progressively harder waves of NPC enemies. Conceived as a structured wave-based combat alternative to the open-world Contact Missions and Heists, Survival was one of the earliest cooperative modes available in GTA Online and remains an enduring fixture of the game's job rotation more than a decade after launch (Wikipedia, 2026; GTA Wiki, 2026a).

In Rockstar's own categorisation of Online activities, Survival sits alongside Deathmatch, Races and Contact Missions as one of the four pillars of structured "jobs", and is described as pitting "a team of up to four players against ten waves of enemies" (Wikipedia, 2026). On the in-game map, Survival jobs are denoted by a blue shield icon with a cross in the middle (GTA Wiki, 2026a).

Unlocking and Access

Survival is unlocked at rank 15, at which point the character Ron Jakowski contacts the player to introduce the mode. The Industrial Plant Survival serves as a mandatory tutorial event that must be played to progress online (GTA Wiki, 2026a; Gibbs, 2026). After completion of the tutorial, all unlocked Survival maps become selectable from the Jobs menu or by driving to a Survival map icon in Freemode.

Gameplay Structure

Each Survival match consists of ten waves of attacking pedestrians, vehicles and, in later rounds, Buzzard attack helicopters. A bar in the lower-right HUD tracks wave progression, and the game flags the final remaining NPC of each wave so that players can safely break cover, scavenge ammunition, refill body armour and reposition (GTA Wiki, 2026a). Between waves, players receive a 20-second intermission during which fallen teammates respawn โ€” death mid-wave forces the player into spectator mode until the next wave begins. If the entire team is eliminated before the end of wave 10, the match terminates and payouts are scaled proportionally to the highest wave reached (GTA Wiki, 2026a).

Each map is bounded by invisible horizontal and vertical "out-of-bounds" zones, which prevent players from exploiting rooftops or distant terrain that would otherwise trivialise the encounter (GTA Wiki, 2026a). NPC spawning is scripted at a defined rate rather than instantaneous, which both extends each match to roughly 25โ€“30 minutes and creates the characteristic risk of enemies materialising close to dispersed players.

Wave composition escalates predictably: wave 1 introduces Combat Pistols and Micro SMGs against roughly 24 enemies for a four-player team, while later waves bring SMGs, Assault Rifles, RPGs, Tear Gas, Assault Shotguns, Heavy Snipers, Grenade Launchers and finally Miniguns, alongside vehicle convoys and up to three Buzzard helicopters by wave 10 (GTA Wiki, 2026a). Health packs and body armour respawn in fixed locations at the start of every wave, and looting fallen NPCs is a key source of ammunition.

Payouts and Rewards

Original Survival maps award $30,000 for completing all ten waves, along with the "Unnatural Selection" achievement/trophy for the first successful run (GTA Wiki, 2026a). Newer maps introduced from the Survival Series Week event (September 2019) onward use a revised time-based payout system that increases the wave-10 reward to approximately $50,000 and pays better during partial completions (GTA Wiki, 2026a). Community guides report typical solo payouts of around $20,000 for completion and roughly $18,000 for reaching wave 10 before death (Gibbs, 2026).

Endless Mode and Juggernauts

The Survival Series Week revamp also introduced an optional "endless waves" mode. From wave 11 onward, armour pickups are permanently removed; from wave 12, enemy combat ability increases; wave 13 raises enemy counts; wave 14 increases enemy health and armour; and wave 15 permanently removes health pickups. From wave 16 onward, each subsequent wave scales one of these aspects again (GTA Wiki, 2026a). Heavily armoured Juggernaut enemies begin to appear in endless mode, and on the Nuclear Silo Survival map โ€” where helicopters are not used โ€” Juggernauts also appear within the standard ten waves.

Map Library

Original maps include Boneyard, Industrial Plant, Processed, Sawmill Plant, Railyard Survival and Sandy Survival, with Del Perro Pier (Beach Bum), Legion Square (I'm Not a Hipster) and Maze Bank (Business Update) added through 2013โ€“2014 DLC drops (GTA Wiki, 2026a). The 2019 Survival Series Week added Farmhouse, Forest, Grove Street, Meth Lab, Nuclear Silo, Stab City and Zancudo. The Halloween Surprise 2019 event introduced the limited-time "Project 4808" series (seven maps across Terminal, Ranch, Grapeseed, Desert, Arena, Pillbox and Zancudo locations), which were removed on 14 November 2019 but recur during subsequent Halloween events. Survivals Week 2021 added Glass Heroes, Kortz, Maibatsu Motors, Quarry, Scrapyard, Underpass and Vespucci Canals, with Ludendorff Cemetery added in Halloween 2024 and a Cayo Perico Survival added in August 2025 (GTA Wiki, 2026a).

Tactics

Community strategy guides recommend opening waves with submachine guns or assault rifles, transitioning to AP Pistols and shotguns at mid-game, and using RPGs or Grenade Launchers against the vehicle drops from wave 3 onward. Helicopters in waves 4, 7 and 10 are best dispatched with Miniguns, Heavy Sniper rifles or RPGs, with leading shots required to compensate for movement. Sticky bombs reward camping playstyles, headshots conserve ammunition through one-shot kills, and Snacks should be stocked before queueing to allow on-the-fly health regeneration. Players with sufficient funds can also call Merryweather mercenary support for around $5,000 (Gibbs, 2026). Processed and Boneyard are widely recommended as low-helicopter starter maps for solo grinders working toward the wave-9 Minigun pickup.

Significance

Although Survival has been overshadowed in modern GTA Online by Heists, businesses and Freemode events as primary money earners, it remains a comparatively low-overhead source of RP and cash that requires no property investment, scales cleanly to solo play, and is regularly featured as a bonus-payout activity during weekly events such as Survivals Week and Halloween rotations (Wikipedia, 2026; GTA Wiki, 2026a). Its design โ€” fixed arenas, defined wave caps, looted weapon escalation โ€” also prefigures many of the later "defend the location" mission structures used across MC business resupplies, Doomsday Heist setups and the San Andreas Mercenaries DLC.
