Ambrosia, the GTA VI parody of Florida's Atlantic "Gold Coast" corridor, draws heavily on the real-world archipelago of Broward County resort communities that stretch north from Miami toward Palm Beach. Where Vice City satirises Miami's South Beach glamour and Leonida's interior lampoons rural swamp culture, Ambrosia's resort towns occupy a distinct middle register: faded Art Deco hotels, manicured beach promenades, snowbird condominiums, yacht basins, and the lingering ghosts of MTV-era Spring Break. The archetype is Fort Lauderdale and its neighbours (Hollywood, Pompano Beach, Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea), which together host more than 13 million overnight visitors annually and over 50,000 registered yachts (Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, 2019). This document surveys the real referents that inform Ambrosia's fictional resort strip and the cultural codes Rockstar is likely to satirise.
Fort Lauderdale is the indispensable template. Founded around forts built during the Second Seminole War and incorporated in 1911, it grew explosively during the 1920s Florida land boom before being devastated by the 1926 Miami Hurricane and the Great Depression (Wikipedia, 2025a). Post-war development produced 165 miles of inland canals β earning the nickname "Venice of America" β and a tourism economy anchored by seven miles of beach along State Road A1A. The city's tropical rainforest climate (KΓΆppen Af), 75.5 Β°F annual average, and roughly 3,000 sunshine hours per year underwrite a year-round resort calendar (Wikipedia, 2025a). Port Everglades is the world's third-busiest cruise port, processing nearly four million passengers annually, while the city's 100-plus marinas justify the "yachting capital of the world" branding (Greater Fort Lauderdale CVB, 2019). For Ambrosia, this maps onto a satirical canal-city with mega-yachts, fibreglass dolphins, and Tex-Mex chains lining a Las Olas analogue.
A second cultural layer is the Spring Break mythos. The tradition began in 1934 when Colgate University's swim team relocated winter training to Fort Lauderdale's new Olympic pool (Marsh, 2006). Glendon Swarthout's 1960 novel Where the Boys Are, and the film adaptation released the same year, transformed a modest 20,000-student migration into a national bacchanal; by the early 1980s, 250,000β350,000 college students arrived each March (George, 1991; Wikipedia, 2025b). Resident backlash, 1985 municipal anti-party ordinances, and the National Minimum Drinking Age Act (raising Florida's drinking age from 18 to 21) collapsed turnout to 20,000 by 1989 (Laurie, 2008). Daytona Beach, Panama City Beach, and South Padre Island absorbed the displaced crowds in turn, with each cycling through the same boom-bust-regulation pattern. Ambrosia's resort towns can be expected to dramatise the post-Spring-Break hangover: shuttered nightclubs, repurposed motels, and a tourism board chasing "family-friendly" rebrands while crime, rave culture, and informal economies fill the void.
Hollywood, Florida β nicknamed the "Diamond of the Gold Coast" β was platted in 1921 by Joseph Wesley Young as a Californian-styled planned community, complete with yacht basins designed by Panama Canal chief engineer George Washington Goethals (Wikipedia, 2025c). Its 2.5-mile Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (the guitar-shaped 2019 tower), and a heavily Latino demographic (39.9 per cent Hispanic in 2020) supply a different texture from Fort Lauderdale: more QuΓ©bΓ©cois snowbirds, more Cuban and Colombian diaspora, more mid-century motel architecture. Pompano Beach contributes the Goodyear Blimp base and harness-racing kitsch; Dania Beach contributes antique-row Americana and the Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park, originally created in 1954 as a segregated "Colored Beach" before the 1961 wade-in protests desegregated Broward County beaches (Wikipedia, 2025a). This racial history is precisely the kind of substrate Rockstar typically weaponises through environmental storytelling, signage gags, and side missions.
For Ambrosia, the resort-town belt offers Rockstar a ribbon of distinct districts strung between the Vice City core and the rural north: each with its own architectural pastiche (Streamline Moderne, post-war motor courts, 1960s towers, 2010s glass condos), its own demographic gag (retiree communities, Quebec snowbirds, Eastern-European nightclub owners, Caribbean diaspora), and its own criminal opportunity surface (yacht theft, casino heists, condo-board corruption, time-share scams, Spring Break drug trafficking). The combined population of the real Broward coastal cities exceeds 500,000 permanent residents and swells dramatically during winter and Easter β a density-cycling pattern that an open-world game can exploit through dynamic NPC populations and seasonal events.
