Just as the Florida Keys are inseparable from the Florida Reef Tract — the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States — the underwater landscape surrounding the Leonida Keys is poised to recreate one of the most biologically diverse and visually spectacular marine ecosystems in North America. Rockstar Games' promotional copy explicitly frames the keys as the "doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America" (Rockstar Games, 2025), a tagline that signals deep aquatic exploration as a core pillar of the game's environmental design.
The Florida Reef stretches roughly 270 km from Fowey Rocks near Soldier Key to the Marquesas Keys, sitting approximately 6–7 km seaward of the island chain along the 20-metre depth contour and encompassing more than 6,000 individual reefs (Wikipedia, 2025). Florida waters host over 500 marine fish and mammal species, more than 45 species of stony corals, and 35 species of octocorals (Florida Department of Environmental Protection, cited in Wikipedia, 2025). Given Rockstar's pattern of satirical environmental commentary (e.g., the Humane Labs and oil rigs of GTA V), the Leonida Keys reefs are likely to feature in-world signage referencing bleaching events, sanctuary protections mirroring the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and possibly a fictionalised hurricane (Hurricane Roxy is already canonised in pre-release material) that has scarred the reef tract. Underwater wildlife — sharks, barracuda, parrotfish, sea turtles, and stingrays — will populate the reef communities, echoing the ~1,400 marine species documented on the real Florida Reef.
Coral reefs in the Leonida Keys serve multiple functional roles. Mechanically, they provide collectible-rich exploration zones (sunken treasure, smuggling drops echoing the historical wrecking economy of 19th-century Key West, where 618+ ships wrecked between 1848 and 1859), photography opportunities for in-game social media (Vinewood/LifeInvader analogues), and potential mission staging for drug-trafficking storylines tied to protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Thematically, the reef functions as a visual metaphor for fragility — beautiful, irreplaceable, and threatened by the same criminal and corporate excesses the GTA series routinely satirises.
