Before the events of Grand Theft Auto VI propel him into the open-state crime spree depicted in the game's marketing, Jason Duval is established as a fixture of the Leonida Keys β Rockstar Games' fictionalised analogue of the Florida Keys. His Keys-era life is the foundational backstory the player inherits at the start of the game: a former U.S. Army serviceman drifting through paradise on the periphery of a long-running narcotics economy, lodging in a stilt house on Key Lento at the sufferance of a veteran drug runner named Brian Heder, and gravitating toward the partnership with Lucia Caminos that becomes the spine of the narrative (Rockstar Games, 2025; Wikipedia, 2026; GTA Wiki, 2026a).
The Leonida Keys are one of three principal regions of the state of Leonida confirmed in Rockstar's promotional materials and the May 2025 second trailer, alongside Vice City (a Miami analogue) and the Grassrivers (an Everglades analogue). The Keys are explicitly based on the Florida Keys archipelago, complete with stilt houses, mangrove channels, marinas, and a tourist-economy veneer that conceals a long-standing smuggling culture β a setting Rockstar has used to evoke the franchise's earlier Vice City iconography while updating it for the 2020s (Wikipedia, 2026). Jason's home base, Key Lento, is one of the small island communities within this region and contains the safehouse he occupies for the opening stretch of the story (GTA Wiki, 2026a; GTA Wiki, 2026b).
Rockstar's official character bio, published on the Grand Theft Auto VI website alongside the May 2025 trailer, frames Jason's drift to the Keys as the latest in a sequence of attempts to outrun a troubled adolescence: "Jason grew up around grifters and crooks. After a stint in the Army trying to shake off his troubled teens, he found himself in the Keys doing what he knows best, working for local drug runners. It might be time to try something new" (Rockstar Games, 2025, quoted in GTA Wiki, 2026a). The bio's framing is consistent with Jason Schreier's earlier Bloomberg reporting that Rockstar's writers were drawing on a Bonnie-and-Clyde template, casting Jason as the weary, reluctant half of the duo β a man who "wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder" (Rockstar Games, 2025; Wikipedia, 2026).
The military background is more than texture: it supplies a plausible source of Jason's facility with firearms and vehicles, justifies his willingness to handle violent contingencies for his employers, and links him narratively to the wider tradition of post-service GTA protagonists, from Tommy Vercetti to Michael De Santa. Crucially, however, Rockstar has positioned Jason as a man whose competence is tempered by exhaustion rather than ambition β a deliberate contrast with the more volatile Lucia Caminos (Wikipedia, 2026).
Jason's occupation is listed in promotional materials and reference works simply as "drug trafficking", but the more specific role indicated by the bio and the supporting cast is that of a runner β the operational tier of the Keys' narcotics economy responsible for moving product between coves, marinas, and inland buyers rather than financing or directing it (GTA Wiki, 2026a; Wikipedia, 2026). The first trailer (December 2023) and the second trailer (May 2025) show Jason at the wheel of trucks and speedboats, around airboats and stilt houses, and in motel rooms with cash and contraband β all visual shorthand for the courier-and-muscle stratum of a smuggling pipeline rather than its leadership (Wikipedia, 2026).
This positioning matters thematically: drug-running in the Keys has been a defining cultural and criminal motif in American crime fiction since the 1970s "cocaine cowboys" era that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) parodied, and Rockstar's choice to open GTA VI with a protagonist embedded in that economy reads as a deliberate generational update β the same coast, the same trade, but two decades on, after the speedboat-and-seaplane romanticism has curdled into precarity. Jason is not Sonny Crockett and he is not Tommy Vercetti; he is the underpaid help (Wikipedia, 2026).
The single most important relationship of Jason's Keys-era life β at least as established before the story begins β is his arrangement with Brian Heder, described by Rockstar as "a longtime drug runner in the Keys and Jason's landlord" (Rockstar Games, 2025, in Wikipedia, 2026). According to the GTA Wiki summary, Heder "permitted Jason to stay at one of his properties in Key Lento on the condition that he help with local illicit business" (GTA Wiki, 2026a). The property in question is the Key Lento Safehouse, a stilt house identified as Jason's home in the character infobox (GTA Wiki, 2026a; GTA Wiki, 2026b).
The HederβDuval relationship is structurally significant for three reasons. First, it economically traps Jason: housing is conditional on continued participation in the trade, so any attempt to "try something new" β the phrase from his bio β is also a decision to give up his home. Second, it generationally situates him: Heder is the veteran, Jason the junior; the Keys' smuggling culture is depicted as a multi-decade institution into which newcomers like Jason are absorbed rather than one they create. Third, it foreshadows conflict: Rockstar's track record across GTA III, San Andreas, IV and V is to introduce a protagonist's landlord-employer figure precisely so that the relationship can deteriorate, and the listing of Heder among the principal supporting cast in the May 2025 website update strongly implies a comparable arc here (Wikipedia, 2026; GTA Wiki, 2026a).
The Keys phase of Jason's life is the period during which he meets Lucia Caminos, the game's second protagonist and a recent releasee from Leonida Penitentiary. Rockstar's bio cryptically frames the encounter β "Meeting Lucia could be the best or worst thing to ever happen to him. Jason knows how he'd like it to turn out but right now, it's hard to tell" β and the first trailer's motel-room footage at the Starlet Motel, alongside the duo's robbery of Uncle Jack's Liquor, depicts the early stages of the partnership that displaces the Heder arrangement as the organising fact of Jason's life (Rockstar Games, 2025, in GTA Wiki, 2026a; Wikipedia, 2026).
Jason's time in the Keys functions as the game's pre-credits world: a low-stakes, sun-bleached, dependency-laden equilibrium that the player is presumably required to dismantle. By rooting him in a specific subregion (the Keys), a specific island (Key Lento), a specific dwelling (the stilt-house safehouse), and a specific patron (Brian Heder) before the bank-heist-and-conspiracy plot reported in coverage of the second trailer kicks in, Rockstar is constructing the most geographically and economically grounded protagonist origin in the franchise since Michael De Santa's North Yankton flashback in GTA V (Wikipedia, 2026).
