On 20 November 2025, Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 was crowned Best Game Trailer at the 43rd Golden Joystick Awards, hosted at 8 Northumberland Avenue in London by Resident Evil Village actress Maggie Robertson (Loveridge, 2025; BBC, 2025). The win โ decided across more than 21 million public votes cast in 22 categories โ confirmed that, despite the game itself being delayed to 19 November 2026, Rockstar's second cinematic reveal remained the single most celebrated piece of marketing material released during the 2025 awards cycle (BBC, 2025; Wikipedia, 2026a). The trailer beat a strong field that included Battlefield 6's Official Launch Live Action Trailer, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's CGI "Live a Life Medieval", the Romeo is a Dead Man announcement, the Expanse: Osiris Reborn announcement and Rhythm Doctor's release date trailer (Loveridge, 2025). Alongside the trailer prize, Grand Theft Auto VI also took home Most Wanted Game for the second consecutive year, while Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 dominated the ceremony with a record-equalling seven wins including Ultimate Game of the Year (BBC, 2025; Loveridge, 2025).
The Golden Joystick Awards, also known as the People's Gaming Awards, were established in 1983 and constitute the longest-running and one of the largest public-voted video game award ceremonies in the world, operated by Future plc through its GamesRadar+ property (Wikipedia, 2026b). The Best Game Trailer category is decided exclusively by public ballot, making it a direct measure of audience resonance rather than industry consensus. Previous winners of the category include Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty (2023) and Helldivers 2 (2024), placing GTA VI Trailer 2 in a recent lineage of marketing touchstones (Wikipedia, 2026b).
Trailer 2 launched on 6 May 2025, seventeen months after the December 2023 debut trailer (Wikipedia, 2026a). The 3-minute-12-second video revealed the full names of returning protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, expanded the Vice City and Leonida Keys backdrop, and introduced supporting characters Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, Real Dimez (Bae-Luxe and Roxy), Raul Bautista and Brian Heder (Wikipedia, 2026a). Its soundtrack โ anchored by The Pointer Sisters' "Hot Together", along with Wang Chung's "Everybody Have Fun Tonight", Zenglen's "Child Support" and Tammy Wynette's "Talkin' to Myself Again" โ caused a 182,000 % surge in Spotify streams of the lead song, demonstrating cross-cultural lift well beyond gaming circles (Wikipedia, 2026a).
Rockstar pre-empted scepticism over visual fidelity by explicitly stating the footage was a mix of cutscenes and gameplay captured on PlayStation 5 hardware (Wikipedia, 2026a). The trailer accumulated over 475 million views across all platforms in its first 24 hours, surpassing the Deadpool & Wolverine marketing benchmark to set, briefly, the all-time record for biggest video launch on the internet โ a record only later eclipsed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day's 2026 trailer (Wikipedia, 2026a). By November 2025 the original December 2023 reveal had also climbed to 268 million views, making the GTA VI marketing duo the second-most-viewed trailer pair in YouTube history (Wikipedia, 2026a).
Three interlocking factors explain the result. First, raw reach: hundreds of millions of impressions in days created a critical mass of viewers eligible to vote. Second, cultural penetration: meme adoption (notably the "Jason is just fixing some leaks" gag referencing the 2022 source-code breach), influencer reactions and music-streaming spillover converted passive viewers into emotionally invested advocates (Wikipedia, 2026a). Third, scarcity and stakes: with the game delayed twice โ first to 26 May 2026 and again on 6 November 2025 to 19 November 2026 โ every piece of official footage carried disproportionate informational weight for a fan base that had waited since 2013's GTA V (Wikipedia, 2026a; BBC, 2025). The BBC explicitly highlighted the paradox that "despite Grand Theft Auto 6 being delayed, it hasn't stopped it from picking up two awards before it's even out" (BBC, 2025).
The award validates a marketing playbook centred on long silences punctuated by extremely high-production-value, music-led cinematic drops rather than continuous content trickle. For competing publishers, it signalled that licensed period-appropriate music selection materially shifts cultural conversation. For Take-Two Interactive, the recognition arrived during a turbulent period โ share price had dipped almost 10 % after the November delay announcement, and 34 staff were dismissed on 30 October 2025 amid IWGB union-busting accusations (Wikipedia, 2026a). The Golden Joystick win therefore functioned as a stabilising public-relations beat, reinforcing demand integrity heading into 2026.
GTA VI Trailer 2's Best Game Trailer win at the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards is the formal public-vote ratification of what view-count and chart data already suggested: it is the defining game trailer of the mid-2020s. Its victory, paired with the franchise's second consecutive Most Wanted Game gong, demonstrates that Rockstar's anticipation engine remains uniquely capable of converting sparse output into industry-shifting cultural events.
