Sports and athletic minigames have long served as one of the principal expressions of the Grand Theft Auto series' commitment to open-world breadth, providing players with optional, low-stakes activities that contrast sharply with the franchise's headline criminal escapades. With Grand Theft Auto VI (hereafter GTA VI) scheduled for release on 19 November 2026 and set within the fictional state of Leonida โ a satirical reimagining of Florida โ the prospect of a fresh, sun-drenched roster of athletic pursuits is among the most anticipated dimensions of the game (Wikipedia, 2026a). This report examines the legacy of sports minigames in Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V), considers what has already been confirmed or strongly hinted regarding GTA VI's recreational offerings, and speculates on Florida-themed activities that the Vice City setting plausibly invites, drawing on three independent sources.
GTA V, released in September 2013 for the seventh generation of consoles and subsequently re-released across three further hardware generations, established the most ambitious slate of sporting activities in the series to date (Wikipedia, 2026b). The Los Santos-and-Blaine-County map, modelled on Southern California, accommodated a broad spectrum of leisure pursuits suited to its arid hills, suburban country clubs and coastal stretches. Golf at the Los Santos Golf Club offered a full nine-hole course with realistic swing mechanics, club selection and putting; tennis was likewise rendered as a self-contained minigame governed by stamina, shot placement and rally pacing. Endurance events took the form of triathlons across three escalating distances, combining cycling, swimming and on-foot running through Vinewood, Pacific Bluffs and the Alamo Sea. Beyond those flagship offerings, players could engage in darts at pubs, off-road races, yoga sessions at Michael's Rockford Hills residence, sea races, parachuting challenges and BASE jumping โ the latter explicitly catalogued among the "context-specific activities" that defined the freeroam experience (Wikipedia, 2026b). Crucially, these activities were tied to character skills: stamina, strength, shooting, stealth, flying, driving, lung capacity and a special ability meter improved through repeated participation, embedding sport organically into long-term progression (Wikipedia, 2026b).
Rockstar has been characteristically guarded about specific minigames, but the two official trailers, accompanying website update and 70 screenshots released alongside the second trailer in May 2025 have collectively confirmed a Vice City setting that "predominantly features" Miami-inspired urban districts together with Grassrivers (Everglades), the Leonida Keys, Mount Kalaga National Park, Ambrosia and Port Gellhorn (Wikipedia, 2026a). The variegated geography โ swamp, beach, keys, mountain park and metropolitan waterfront โ implies a more aquatically and outdoors-oriented sporting palette than San Andreas could support. IGN's catalogue of trailer details enumerated jet-skis, speedboats, motorboats, beach scenes, joggers and assorted watercraft visible throughout the marketing footage, all of which are consistent with playable athletic systems rather than mere set dressing (Purslow, 2023). The presence of Mount Kalaga National Park further suggests hiking, cycling or trail-running could return in a form expanded from Red Dead Redemption 2's naturalistic locomotion systems.
Given Leonida's parody of 2020s Floridian culture (Wikipedia, 2026a), several sports map naturally onto the setting. Jet-ski racing across the Keys' shallow turquoise waters is among the most strongly signalled additions, with personal watercraft repeatedly featured in promotional imagery (Purslow, 2023). Beach volleyball, a staple of South Beach culture, has appeared in earlier Rockstar titles in rudimentary form and would dovetail with Vice City's beach-promenade aesthetic. Surfing โ absent from GTA V despite player demand โ becomes geographically plausible given the Atlantic-facing coastline, and modders have long demonstrated proof-of-concept surfing systems atop the RAGE engine that GTA VI now inherits (Wikipedia, 2026a). Golf returns as the most probable carry-over: Florida hosts more golf courses per capita than any other US state, and the country-club-and-condo iconography parodied in the second trailer (cf. references to wealthy enclaves) practically demands a Leonida equivalent of the Los Santos course. Sport-fishing, deep-sea charter excursions, kayaking through Grassrivers' mangroves, paddle-boarding and beach running likewise suit the climate. Tennis and pickleball โ the latter a recent Floridian obsession โ are obvious candidates for inclusion among the satirical activities that the game world has been confirmed to lampoon. Triathlons, having proved popular in GTA V, could readily be restaged across Vice City's seafront boulevards.
Sport in Grand Theft Auto VI will almost certainly inherit the structural template laid down by GTA V โ optional, skill-linked minigames woven into the freeroam fabric โ while adapting that template to the wetter, balmier, more leisure-saturated environment of Leonida. Although Rockstar has not formally catalogued the sporting roster, the confirmed setting, the watercraft and outdoor leisure equipment visible in marketing materials, and the studio's record of geographically appropriate activity design together make a strong case for jet-skiing, surfing, beach volleyball, golf, sport-fishing and water-based triathlons forming the recreational backbone of the game. The 19 November 2026 release will provide definitive answers; until then, sport remains one of the richer veins of informed speculation in the discourse surrounding GTA VI.
