Of all the open-world spaces Rockstar Games has constructed since the franchise pivoted to three dimensions, none has been as fundamentally aquatic as the fictional state of Leonida. Grand Theft Auto VI (hereafter GTA VI) is set within a Florida analogue whose principal regions — Vice City, the Leonida Keys, and the Everglades-inspired Grassrivers — are defined as much by water as by land (Wikipedia, 2026; Rockstar Games, 2025). The biographical material Rockstar released alongside the second trailer in May 2025 makes the centrality of boating culture explicit: Jason Duval works for "local drug runners" in the Keys, his landlord Brian Heder is "a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys" who still moves "product through his boat yard", and his friend Cal Hampton spends his days "snooping on Coast Guard comms" (Rockstar Games, 2025). The present report consolidates publicly available evidence on the boats and watercraft of GTA VI, situates them within Florida's real boating culture, and compares them to the marine fleets of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) and Grand Theft Auto V (2013).
The two official trailers and the seventy promotional screenshots released in May 2025 have together exposed an unusually large marine roster for a pre-release GTA title. The GTA Wiki's catalogue of confirmed vehicles, compiled from official Rockstar Newswire posts and screenshot analysis, lists at least three distinct broad categories of watercraft (GTA Wiki, 2026).
Speedboats and performance craft. Several recurring HD-Universe boats return, including the Squalo and a second-generation Seashark personal watercraft, alongside a new Lure Predator fishing boat. The roster of real-world-inspired speedboats is unusually deep, with vehicles modelled on the Contender 39ST centre console, the Cigarette 38' Top Gun, the Crownline 275 SS, the Frauscher 1017 GT, the Highfield Sport 900 RIB, the Sea Ray 350 Sundancer and the Skater 388 powerboat (GTA Wiki, 2026). The Cigarette 38' Top Gun reference is particularly resonant: the boat is synonymous with the Miami drug-running era that Vice City originally satirised, and its inclusion ties the contemporary setting back to that historical lineage.
Jet-skis and personal watercraft. A new Sea-Doo RXT-X 300-inspired jet-ski has been documented in screenshots, supplementing the returning second-generation Seashark. Jet-ski trailers are confirmed as a distinct vehicle category, suggesting that personal watercraft can be hauled and launched dynamically rather than spawning at fixed docks (GTA Wiki, 2026).
Airboats. The Leonida Keys and the Everglades-inspired Grassrivers region are explicitly served by airboats. An "Airboat 09" entry is confirmed, alongside a Panther-inspired POACH airboat — the latter associated with the "POACH" agency, likely a satirical Fish and Wildlife enforcement body (GTA Wiki, 2026). The Panther Airboats reference is significant because Panther is a real Florida airboat manufacturer (Panther Airboats, n.d.); Rockstar's choice to model rather than fabricate the vendor reflects the studio's customary practice of mapping its parodies tightly onto recognisable real-world brands.
Yachts and large vessels. Marina-bound luxury craft include yachts inspired by the Azimut Atlantis 45, the Azimut 85, the Horizon PC60, the Lürssen 73m Coral Ocean and the Riva 86 Domino, alongside utility vessels such as a dive boat, a shrimp boat, a fishing boat and a sailing yacht (GTA Wiki, 2026). Coast Guard activity is represented by RB-S and RB-S II-inspired patrol boats, and a Contender 39ST-inspired police boat is confirmed from artwork featuring Jason and Lucia under arrest (GTA Wiki, 2026).
Florida is the most boat-saturated state in the United States. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported 1,038,890 registered vessels in 2023, placing the state first in the nation for vessel registrations and well above any comparable jurisdiction (FWC, 2023). The state is also the global capital of the airboat — a flat-bottomed propeller-driven craft developed in the early twentieth century specifically to navigate the shallow grass-prairies of the Everglades, where conventional submerged props are unusable (Panther Airboats, n.d.). Florida is similarly synonymous with high-performance offshore racing: the Miami-based Cigarette Racing Team's "go-fast" boats became cultural shorthand for the 1980s cocaine trade and were canonised in the film Miami Vice and Rockstar's own Vice City (2002).
GTA VI appears to engage with all three strata of this culture simultaneously: working-class fishing and shrimping vessels evocative of the Gulf Coast, Everglades airboats tied to wildlife and law-enforcement parody, jet-skis as the leisure mainstay of Vice Beach, and ultra-luxury yachts representing the South Florida wealth gap. The narrative framing — Jason as a Keys-based drug runner, Brian Heder operating a boat yard as a smuggling front — restores the maritime crime economy as a core gameplay arena in a way that Grand Theft Auto V's Los Santos coastline never seriously attempted.
The original Grand Theft Auto: Vice City offered a comparatively spartan marine fleet: the Coast Guard, the Cuban Jetmax, the Dinghy, the Marquis sailing yacht, the Predator police boat, the Reefer fishing boat, the Rio speedboat, the Skimmer seaplane (a hybrid case) the Squalo speedboat, the Tropic and the Violator. While substantial for 2002, these vessels were largely cosmetic; water acted as a barrier separating the islands rather than as a gameplay surface in its own right, and several boats were placed at fixed docks with minimal handling differentiation.
Grand Theft Auto V expanded the marine roster modestly with the Dinghy, Marquis, Police Predator, Seashark (its first jet-ski), Speeder, Squalo, Suntrap, Toro, Tropic and Tug, and added the Submersible as a unique exploration tool. However, water-based missions remained a minority of the campaign and the Los Santos coastline lacked the inland navigable waterways that define Florida.
GTA VI's confirmed roster already exceeds both predecessors in raw count, and its qualitative composition is markedly different. The presence of multiple distinct yacht classes, dedicated airboats, a fishing-oriented Lure Predator, a shrimp boat, a dive boat and a sailing yacht points to a layered marine economy rather than a token vehicle category. The inclusion of trailers for both boats and jet-skis, combined with Brian Heder's boat yard as a story location, strongly suggests that ownership, mooring and trailered transport will be playable systems — features only hinted at in earlier titles.
The marine evidence from trailers, screenshots and Rockstar's character bios indicates that watercraft are not an ancillary system in GTA VI but a structural pillar of the Leonida sandbox. Speedboats anchored in 1980s Miami iconography, jet-skis lifted from contemporary Vice Beach tourism, airboats drawn from Everglades vendor culture, and yachts modelled on identifiable luxury marques together compose a fleet that mirrors Florida's real, million-vessel boating economy more faithfully than any previous Grand Theft Auto title. The narrative apparatus surrounding Jason, Brian Heder and Cal Hampton makes maritime smuggling a core dramatic arena, recovering a thematic territory that Vice City (2002) introduced and GTA V (2013) largely abandoned.
