Although GTA VI is set in a modern, 2020s-coded Leonida (a parody of contemporary Florida), the city's atmosphere remains saturated with 1980s-derived chromatic codes: hot magenta, cyan, electric pink, sodium-orange streetlamps, and pastel facades washed in tropical sunset. This visual continuity is no accident. The neon look originated in the cultural collision of Miami Modern (MiMo) and Art Deco revival architecture with the broader 1980s synth-pop and Miami Vice television aesthetic, and it has been retroactively cemented by the Vice City sub-franchise itself, which directly inspired the synthwave/outrun visual genre (Diak, in Wetmore, 2018). The neon aesthetic of Vice City is anchored architecturally in two real-world South Florida styles. The first is the Miami Beach Art Deco Historic District along Ocean Drive, with its pastel-painted, geometric, streamlined hotels from the 1930s–40s, which became visually synonymous with Miami after their 1980s restoration. The second, more often overlooked, is Miami Modern (MiMo), a regional post-war (1945–1960) style developed by architects such as Morris Lapidus and Norman Giller (Wikipedia, 2026a). Crucially, the neon look that GTA VI deploys is not a faithful reconstruction of the 1980s alone—it is a reconstruction filtered through synthwave/outrun, a visual-musical microgenre that itself was inspired by the GTA: Vice City game of 2002. The first GTA VI trailer opens with low-altitude drone-style shots of Vice Beach at magic hour, with the sun low over the Atlantic, the sky banded in coral-pink and cyan, and Art Deco hotel facades reflecting saturated tangerine light. Subsequent shots cycle to neon-lit nightlife: pink and turquoise strip-club signage, palm trees silhouetted against an electric-blue horizon, and helicopters tracking across a skyline of MiMo-style towers (Rockstar Games, 2023; Purslow, 2023). The neon aesthetic of Vice City functions on three levels in GTA VI. Architecturally, it provides authentic regional grounding via Art Deco and MiMo, which remain physically present in Miami today and are protected by historic preservation (Wikipedia, 2026a). Culturally, it triggers a multi-generational nostalgia hook: older players recall Miami Vice (1984–89) and Scarface (1983); millennials recall Vice City (2002); younger players recognise the synthwave/outrun palette popularised by Drive (2011), Hotline Miami (2012), Stranger Things, and The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" (2020) (Wikipedia, 2026b).
