Among the most striking and discussed wildlife shots in Trailer 2 are several depicting American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) in their natural-looking habitat: lounging on muddy banks, partially submerged in murky water with only their eyes and nostrils exposed, and gliding through sawgrass-flanked waterways. These shots signal that Rockstar's recreation of South Florida will lean heavily on the Everglades' ecological identity, with alligators positioned as both atmospheric set-dressing and likely interactive gameplay hazards in the game's vast wetland regions.
The American alligator is the keystone species of Everglades National Park and arguably no other animal is more closely identified with the region (National Park Service, 2025). Alligators primarily inhabit freshwater swamps and marshes but tolerate brackish water around mangrove fringes for short periods despite lacking the salt-secreting glands found in true crocodiles (National Park Service, 2025). Another shows a partially submerged gator near what appears to be an airboat or fan-boat, reinforcing that the swamp will be a traversable and interactive zone rather than skybox decoration.
Although Rockstar has not detailed mechanics, several reasonable implications emerge from trailer evidence and franchise precedent. GTA V featured no alligators despite its San Andreas setting; GTA VI's emphasis on Everglades-inspired Grassrivers suggests alligators will function as ambient predators similar to the cougars and sharks of GTA V — environmental threats that punish careless exploration on foot or in shallow water. The realistic ambush poses depicted (eyes-only surface profile) imply stealth-attack behaviours, potentially threatening players swimming, wading, or operating low-clearance watercraft. Airboats appearing in the trailer hint at dedicated swamp traversal vehicles, with gators likely serving as obstacles during chases through narrow channels. Mission designers may also leverage gators thematically — body disposal, smuggling routes through gator-infested waters, or hunting/poaching side-activities echoing Red Dead Redemption 2's legendary animal systems, given Rockstar's demonstrated willingness to port ecological systems between franchises.
