The Leonida Keys form one of the most distinctive geographical features of the fictional State of Leonida in Grand Theft Auto VI, occupying the southern tip of Mariana County and serving as the introductory environment for protagonist Jason Duval. A direct, almost forensic rendering of the real Florida Keys, the Leonida Keys archipelago combines tropical seclusion, decaying infrastructure, sun-bleached marina culture and a long shadow of maritime smuggling. Rockstar Games has positioned the Keys as the "Gateway to Paradise", describing them on the official promotional website as a place where "the dress code is casual, the bars are loaded" but cautioning the visitor that they sit "right on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America" (Rockstar Games, 2025). This report draws on official Rockstar materials, GTA community documentation and primary geographical and historical scholarship of the Florida Keys to examine the archipelago's in-game geography, real-world parallel, drug-running heritage, bridge engineering, tourist economy and narrative function in the early portion of the game.
The Leonida Keys are an archipelago of low-lying tropical islands curving south-southwest then westward from the mainland of southern Leonida, bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the north-west and the Straits of Leonida to the south-east (GTA Wiki, 2026). The chain forms the southernmost part of the fictional continental United States within the HD Universe, mirroring the geography of the real Florida Keys almost exactly. Access from the mainland is via the Keys Causeway, which extends out of southern Vice-Dale County before arcing through Mariana County toward the outer islands. Confirmed individual keys include East Key and Key Lento, with further islands implied by promotional screenshots and the first trailer. The terrain is uniformly flat, dominated by mangrove fringes, coral cay flats, palm-lined beachfronts and a thin spine of road threading the islands together. Hurricane Roxy is implied to have impacted the region before the events of the game, leaving storm-damaged trailers, capsized boats and tarpaulined roofs visible in the environment, echoing the lingering scars of Hurricane Irma on the real Lower Keys (GTA Wiki, 2026).
The Leonida Keys are an unambiguous transposition of the Florida Keys, a coral cay archipelago lying almost entirely within Monroe County off the southern coast of Florida. The real Keys begin around 15 miles south of Miami and extend in an arc south-southwest then westward to Key West, the southernmost city of the contiguous United States, before continuing to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas (Wikipedia, 2026a). The northern and central Keys are exposed sections of the ancient Key Largo Limestone reef, while the lower Keys are exposed Miami Limestone (Wikipedia, 2026a). The total land area is roughly 137 square miles with a 2020 census population of 82,874 (Wikipedia, 2026a). Rockstar has reproduced the characteristic linear "string of pearls" geography, the tropical savanna climate, the coral-flat shoreline aesthetic, and even the cultural texture: shabby-chic conch houses, "Conch Republic"βstyle libertarian eccentricity, dockside bars, key lime kitsch and Cuban-American influence. The fictional Mariana County maps neatly onto Monroe County, while the Straits of Leonida echo the Straits of Florida. As GTA Wiki notes plainly, the Leonida Keys are "a direct rendition of the Florida Keys" (GTA Wiki, 2026).
The Keys' tropical isolation, porous coastline and proximity to Caribbean trafficking routes make the region a natural hub for smuggling within the GTA VI narrative. The promotional website's pointed warning about "the most beautiful and dangerous waters" is widely understood as alluding to the offshore drug-running, gun-trafficking and people-smuggling that operates beneath the holiday veneer (Rockstar Games, 2025). Jason Duval, one of the two protagonists, is established as a low-level enforcer running errands for a local crime outfit in the Keys, and early trailer footage depicts speedboat chases, beached cocaine bales, light aircraft on remote airstrips and confrontations on stilted Keys-style houses. The setting is a knowing nod to the real Keys' role during the "Cocaine Cowboys" era of the late 1970s and early 1980s, when South Florida became the principal entry point for Colombian cocaine into the United States and the Overseas Highway was used as a smuggling corridor (Wikipedia, 2026a). The 1982 federal roadblock at Florida City β established to interdict drugs and undocumented migrants and which precipitated the satirical "Conch Republic" secession of Key West β illustrates the historical anti-smuggling apparatus that the in-game economy of the Leonida Keys plays against (Wikipedia, 2026a). Marinas, fishing charters and bait shacks function in-game as plausible fronts for product movement, paralleling decades of documented Florida Keys narcotics activity.
A defining visual motif of both the real and fictional Keys is the long, low ribbon of concrete bridges that stitches the islands into a continuous road. In GTA VI this is the Keys Causeway, supplemented by at least two confirmed structures: an unnamed rail bridge directly modelled on the historic Bahia Honda Rail Bridge, and an unnamed modern road bridge modelled on the "New" Bahia Honda Bridge that replaced it (GTA Wiki, 2026). These mirror the real layered history of the Overseas Highway, a 113-mile section of U.S. Route 1 first opened to continuous traffic in 1938 after Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad was destroyed by the catastrophic 1935 Labor Day hurricane and its right-of-way sold to the state of Florida for US$640,000 (Wikipedia, 2026b). The Seven Mile Bridge, at 10.93 km the longest on the route, connects Knight's Key to Little Duck Key, with the original Flagler-era span preserved as a pedestrian and fishing causeway after a modern replacement was built in the early 1980s (Wikipedia, 2026a; Wikipedia, 2026b). Rockstar's decision to render both a retired rail trestle and its modern successor side-by-side faithfully reproduces a peculiarity of the real Keys, where original bridges of 1909β1912 vintage stand parallel to their 1980s replacements, several of them listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 (Wikipedia, 2026b). The causeway also functions narratively as the single, vulnerable artery linking Jason's Keys lifestyle to the urban world of Vice City β a chokepoint for chases, hurricane evacuations and police roadblocks.
Tourism saturates the Leonida Keys in promotional materials: deck chairs on white sand, dive boats moored at wooden piers, beach bars, motels, jet-skis, sun-faded postcards and the recurring tagline "Gateway to Paradise" (Rockstar Games, 2025). This mirrors the real economic structure of Monroe County, where tourism β supported by the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the world's third-largest barrier reef and the warm tropical savanna climate with average winter highs around 24 Β°C β dominates local employment (Wikipedia, 2026a). Recreational fishing, sport diving, key-lime kitsch retail and the "no-shoes, no-shirt" bar culture are reproduced in the in-game environment around Jason and Lucia Caminos' starting area. Importantly, the Keys also serve as the game's tonal palette cleanser: a slow, sunlit, low-rise counterpoint to the neon density of Vice City further north. The visible storm damage from Hurricane Roxy, combined with hints of trailer parks, meth labs and run-down marinas alongside upmarket resorts, reflects the genuine socio-economic stratification of the real Keys, where high-end tourism coexists uneasily with low-wage service work and the persistent threat of catastrophic hurricanes such as Irma in 2017 (Wikipedia, 2026a).
The Leonida Keys are far more than scenic dressing. They function simultaneously as Jason Duval's home turf, as a faithful satirical mirror of Monroe County and the Overseas Highway, as a stage for the maritime smuggling that drives early-game missions, and as a tonal entry point into the wider state of Leonida. By reproducing the geographic arc, bridge engineering, climate, tourist economy and smuggling history of the real Florida Keys, Rockstar grounds Grand Theft Auto VI in a recognisable American landscape while exploiting its inherent contradictions β paradise and peril, holiday and hustle, causeway and chokepoint. The archipelago's role as the protagonist's starting environment is therefore both narrative and thematic: a fragile string of islands tied to the mainland by a single ribbon of asphalt, on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America.
