Grand Theft Auto VI (commonly abbreviated as GTA VI or GTA 6) is a forthcoming action-adventure title developed and published by Rockstar Games. It represents the eighth mainline entry in the long-running Grand Theft Auto franchise and the sixteenth release within the series overall, following the commercially dominant Grand Theft Auto V (2013) (Wikipedia, 2026). After more than a decade of fan speculation, accidental disclosures and corporate silence, the title is now confirmed for release on 19 November 2026 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles (Rockstar Games, 2026; IGN, 2026). This report provides a synthesised overview of the game's setting, characters, development history, marketing campaign and the controversies that have surrounded its production.
The game returns players to Vice City, a fictionalised analogue of Miami that has previously appeared in Grand Theft Auto (1997), Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (2006). However, the scope is now significantly broader: the open world covers the entire fictional US state of Leonida, modelled on Florida (Wikipedia, 2026). According to descriptions published alongside the second trailer and on the official site, the map encompasses Vice City itself, the swampy Grassrivers region inspired by the Everglades, the tropical Leonida Keys, the rural community of Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga National Park and the smaller settlement of Port Gellhorn (Rockstar Games, 2026; Wikipedia, 2026). The world is presented as a pointed satire of 2020s American life, lampooning influencer culture, the proliferation of body-camera footage in policing and viral internet phenomena such as the "Florida Man" meme (Wikipedia, 2026).
For the first time in the mainline series, Grand Theft Auto VI features a non-optional female protagonist alongside a male lead, forming a romantic criminal duo loosely echoing Bonnie and Clyde (Wikipedia, 2026). Jason Duval is a former soldier who has drifted into work for drug runners in the Leonida Keys, while Lucia Caminos is a Latina ex-convict who has emerged from Leonida Penitentiary after defending her family in Liberty City (Rockstar Games, 2026). The marketing summary distributed by Rockstar describes how an apparently straightforward score goes wrong, drawing the pair into "a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida" and obliging them to depend on one another for survival (Rockstar Games, 2026; IGN, 2026). Supporting characters include the paranoid recluse Cal Hampton, Vice City entrepreneur Boobie Ike, music mogul Dre'Quan Priest of Only Raw Records, the rap duo Real Dimez (Bae-Luxe and Roxy), seasoned bank robber Raul Bautista and veteran smuggler Brian Heder (Rockstar Games, 2026).
Rockstar Games is reported to have begun preliminary work on the title in 2014, shortly after the launch of Grand Theft Auto V, with substantive development commencing in 2018 once Red Dead Redemption 2 had shipped (Wikipedia, 2026). Principal production began in 2020 under the internal code name Project Americas. Notably, this is the first mainline entry since the 1997 original not to be written by Dan Houser, who departed Rockstar in 2020 (Wikipedia, 2026). The game is built on the studio's proprietary Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE). Industry rumours have placed the production budget at between one and two billion US dollars, which, if accurate, would make it the most expensive video game ever produced, although Rockstar itself has not verified the figure (Wikipedia, 2026; IGN, 2026).
The schedule has slipped twice. After originally targeting a 2025 window communicated in the first trailer, the project was first pushed to 26 May 2026 in May 2025, and then delayed again to 19 November 2026 following further internal upheaval (Wikipedia, 2026; Rockstar Games, 2026).
The first official trailer arrived on 5 December 2023, brought forward by one day after a leaked low-quality copy began circulating on Twitter. The official YouTube upload accumulated 93 million views within 24 hours, becoming the most-viewed non-music video debut in YouTube history at that time, and the most-liked game trailer ever (Wikipedia, 2026). A second trailer followed on 6 May 2025, accompanied by a website refresh featuring 70 new screenshots and biographies of the principal cast (Wikipedia, 2026; Rockstar Games, 2026). The second trailer reportedly amassed over 475 million cross-platform views in its first 24 hours, briefly surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine as the largest video launch on record before being eclipsed in 2026 by the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day (Wikipedia, 2026). The promotional cycle has also produced cultural spillover: Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road", used in the first trailer, saw a near 37,000 per cent surge in Spotify streams following its inclusion (Wikipedia, 2026).
In September 2022, a user operating under the alias "teapotuberhacker" published roughly fifty minutes of unfinished gameplay footage drawn from Rockstar's internal Slack workspace, in what journalists at the time described as one of the largest breaches in the history of the video games industry (Wikipedia, 2026). The perpetrator, a seventeen-year-old from Oxfordshire connected to the Lapsus$ hacking collective, was subsequently arrested, found to have committed the acts and placed under an indefinite hospital order in late 2023 (Wikipedia, 2026). Rockstar later disclosed that the breach had cost the company approximately five million dollars to remediate.
More recently, in October 2025, Rockstar dismissed 34 employees โ 31 from Rockstar North and three from Rockstar Toronto โ citing distribution of confidential information. The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) characterised the firings as union-busting and staged protests at the studio's Edinburgh offices, with UK politicians later criticising Rockstar's refusal to engage meaningfully with appeal procedures (Wikipedia, 2026; IGN, 2026). The second delay, announced shortly afterwards, briefly caused Take-Two Interactive's share price to drop by nearly ten per cent (Wikipedia, 2026).
Analysts at DFC Intelligence have projected first-year sales of around 40 million units and revenue of approximately 3.2 billion US dollars โ double the launch performance of Grand Theft Auto V โ including an estimated one billion dollars of pre-orders (Wikipedia, 2026). Some industry observers have argued that Rockstar may price the title at between 80 and 100 US dollars, potentially setting a new standard ceiling for premium console releases, although other analysts consider such pricing strategically risky (Wikipedia, 2026; IGN, 2026). Competing publishers are reportedly reshuffling their release calendars to avoid clashing with the launch window, an effect Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has characterised as a game of "4D chess" played across the entire industry (Wikipedia, 2026).
Grand Theft Auto VI stands as one of the most heavily anticipated entertainment products of the decade. With its sprawling recreation of Florida-inspired Leonida, a narrative anchored by the first non-optional female protagonist in the series, an unprecedented budget and a turbulent path through leaks, labour disputes and delays, the game encapsulates both the ambition and the structural strain of contemporary AAA development. Its eventual release on 19 November 2026 will serve as a significant test of whether Rockstar can convert more than a decade of accumulated expectation into a definitive entry capable of reshaping the console market.
